Tagging people and pets in an album
Tag who's in a photo, or add a "With: …" note to any post — here's how tagging works.
What tagging does
Tagging lets you label who's in a photo — a person or a pet — so everyone in the album knows who they're looking at. Once something is tagged, it shows up on that person's own page in the album, making it easy to find every photo of Grandma or the family dog.
Seeing who's who
Tags stay out of the way so nothing covers the picture. Open a photo and you'll see the names listed underneath it, after the word With:.
To find someone in the picture, hover over their name — on a phone or tablet, tap it — and their label appears right where they are. Hovering or tapping the photo itself brings up everyone's name at once.
Tagging a face in a photo
- Open a photo and tap Tag someone, at the end of the row of names under the picture.
- We'll try to spot faces for you — glowing boxes show where. Tap a box to name that person or pet.
- Pick someone already in the album, or type a new name.
- Don't see a box around someone? Tap anywhere on the photo to draw your own.
Tagging while you're building the album
You don't have to wait until an album is published. Everything above works the same way in the builder — open a photo from your album canvas and tap Tag someone.
There's a second way in, too: choose Edit on a photo or video and open its People tab. Same faces, same boxes, sitting right alongside the caption and the date.
Good to know: names save the moment you add them. Unlike your layout and captions, tags don't wait for Publish Changes.
Tagging on other kinds of posts
Voice notes, stories, documents, and text posts don't have faces to tap — instead, you'll see a simple "With: …" line under the post. Tap the + next to it to add the people or pets who belong there.
You'll find the same thing while you're editing: open the post and look under the caption — or, for a story, under the text — for the People section.
Not sure who someone is? Ask!
See a box or a name you don't recognize? Tap Who is this? to turn it into a question the whole album can help answer. Anyone can suggest a name, and once a few people agree on one, the post's author, the album owner, or a co-editor can confirm it — everyone who guessed gets a friendly "Mystery solved!" notification. If nobody knows, it can stay marked as unidentified.
Finding tags on the People page
Open People from the album menu to see everyone who's been tagged, plus a section for any open "Who is this?" questions still waiting on an answer. Tap a person's name to see every photo they've been tagged in.
If you review posts before they appear
Some album owners like to look at everything before it goes up. If that's you, tags from your members wait for you too — you'll see the name on the post with a dashed outline, and a check mark and an X beside it.
- Tap the check mark to add the name to the album. Everyone can see it from then on, and the person tagged gets a friendly note that they've been tagged.
- Tap the X to turn it down. The name never appears, and nobody is told.
Until you choose, nobody else sees the name — only you, the person who suggested it, and whoever posted the photo. Only you or a co-editor can make the call.
Removing a tag
Tagged someone by mistake, or want a tag gone? Tap the tag and choose Remove. And if you're the one who was tagged, this is always your call — remove a tag of yourself any time, and no one can add it back. That's your right, no exceptions.
Tip: The album owner can turn tagging off entirely for an album, or decide who's allowed to see tags — see Who can see tags? for details.
