Asking "Who is this?" about a photo
Can't place a face in an old photo? Ask everyone in the album, and let them help you name it.
When you don't know who someone is
Old photos have a way of holding faces nobody can quite place. Rather than guessing, you can ask the whole album — the people who were there often remember in a heartbeat.
Asking the question
- Open the photo or post and start to add a tag, the same way you normally would.
- Instead of picking a name, choose "I don't know who this is — ask everyone" at the bottom of the list.
- That spot is now marked as a question, and everyone in the album can help.
You can ask about a face in a photo, or about a post that has no photo at all.
Helping answer one
If you spot a question mark on a photo, tap it and you'll see Do you know who this is?
- Type a name in the box and tap Suggest. If the name is already in the album, it'll come up as you type — just tap it.
- You can suggest a name even if you're not certain. Someone else may recognise it too.
To keep things gentle, there's a limit on how many suggestions one person can make in an hour. If you hit it, just come back a little later.
Agreeing with someone else's answer
The person who wrote the post, the album owner, and any co-editors can see the suggestions as they come in. When they open the question they can tap Agree next to a name they think is right — one vote each — so the most likely answer rises to the top.
Settling it
When the answer is clear, the post's author, the album owner, or a co-editor taps This is who it is next to the right name. The question turns into a normal tag, and everyone who chipped in a suggestion gets a cheerful Mystery solved! note.
And if nobody ever works it out, that's fine too — tap Leave unidentified to close the question quietly. Nothing is lost; the photo stays exactly as it is.
Keeping guesses private
While a question is still open, the individual suggestions are only visible to the post's author, the album owner, and co-editors. Everyone else simply sees that a question is waiting and how many people have chipped in — not the guesses themselves.
Finding open questions later
Open your album's People page and look for the Unidentified section. Every question still waiting for an answer is listed there, and tapping one takes you straight to the photo.
