Choosing what kind of collection it is

What a kind does

Every collection holds one kind of thing: recipes, letters and other documents, a list of who's bringing what, family stories, milestones, and more. When ShareLocket knows the kind, it looks for the details that kind needs, such as the ingredients and steps of a recipe or who is bringing each thing on a list, and shows the collection in the way that suits it.

ShareLocket often works out the kind on its own as a collection grows. You can change it whenever you like.

Choosing the kind

1. Open the collection from your circle.
2. Find Kind beside the collection's name.
3. Choose Plain collection, Recipe, Document, List, Log, Story, Milestone, Guide, Heirloom, or Occasion.
4. That's it. Your choice saves on its own; there is no Save button.

Choose Plain collection if none of the kinds fits. The collection then shows its posts simply, without looking for anything in particular.

While it rearranges

When you choose a new kind, ShareLocket reads the collection's posts again to find the details that kind needs. Meanwhile the collection shows its posts simply, and Rearranging this collection… appears under Kind. You can leave the page; nothing is lost. When it's done, the collection opens in its new arrangement.

Your choice stays

Once someone in your circle chooses a kind, ShareLocket keeps it and never changes it on its own, just as it never changes a name someone chose. Anyone in your circle can choose a different kind, and the choice applies for everyone.

Any value someone fixed in the collection stays the way they fixed it, even after the posts are read again. Choosing a kind never changes the posts themselves, or who can see them.

A collection kept from a question in Ask is managed by the person who kept it or the circle owner, so only they can change its kind. In a paused circle you can see the kind, but it can't be changed until the circle is reopened.
