How much of your location your circle sees

For each circle you belong to, choose whether your posts show the exact spot, the general area, or nowhere at all.

You choose, circle by circle

When you share a photo, ShareLocket can add a place to your post from where the photo was taken. You decide how much of that the rest of each circle sees. It's your choice, for you, and you make it separately in every circle you belong to.

This is what the rest of the circle sees about where your photos were taken. It never changes what you see.

The three choices

  • Nowhere: We never place your posts for you. You can still add a place to anything by hand.
  • The general area: The neighborhood or town, never an address. This is how it works today.
  • The exact spot: The street or place your photo was taken, as closely as we can tell.

Everyone starts with The general area, so nothing changes unless you choose something else.

Changing it

  1. Open the circle you mean.
  2. Choose Circle options, then Circle settings.
  3. Under Your location, find Where your posts show up and choose Nowhere, The general area, or The exact spot.

Showing less saves as soon as you choose it, and you'll see Saved.

Showing more always asks you first, right there on the page:

  • For The exact spot, you'll see "Everyone in your circle will see the exact spot of your photos from now on." Choose Show the exact spot to go ahead.
  • For The general area, when you're moving up from Nowhere, choose Use the general area to go ahead.

Changed your mind? Choose Keep the general area, or Never mind if you were on Nowhere, and nothing changes.

You can also start from your circle's Places page. A short line under the heading says what your posts show, such as "Your posts show the general area." Choose Change to go straight to the setting.

What happens to posts you've already shared

Showing less applies to everything you've shared in that circle, straight away:

  • Move to Nowhere, and the places we added to your posts from your photos come off at once.
  • Move from The exact spot to The general area, and those posts show the general area instead.

Places made only from your photos are removed, unless someone in the circle has renamed or moved them. Places that other people's photos or words also point to stay.

Showing more starts with what you share next. The photos you've already shared stay as they are, unless you tick Also place the photos I've already shared. when you make the change. Tick it, and we go back over the photos you've shared in that circle and place them too.

When someone downloads your photos and videos

Anyone in the circle can download the original of a photo or video you shared. Unless you've chosen The exact spot, the copy they get leaves out where it was taken. Everything else about it stays the same. That's true for a single photo or video, a whole post, the photos and videos in the circle's albums, a download of the whole circle, and photos sent to the circle's picture frames.

With The exact spot, the photos and videos that show the exact spot keep where they were taken when someone downloads them.

When you download your own photos and videos, you always get them exactly as you shared them. A few other kinds of file, such as documents and videos recorded in a web browser, download just as they were shared.

Places you add yourself stay yours

This setting only changes the places we add to your posts from your photos. Anything you set by hand, such as a place you name in a post or a pin you put on the map, is never changed by it.

It's your choice, for you

Nobody else can change it, not the person who started the circle and not us, and nobody else is shown which one you picked. It's a choice for each circle, so if you'd like the same choice everywhere, set it in each circle.

If you leave a circle, or someone removes you from it, your choice there becomes Nowhere, and the places we added from your photos come off just as they would if you'd chosen it.

You can change it even in a circle that's been closed.
