How ShareLocket organizes your circle

How ShareLocket gathers shared posts into collections, how you decide on a suggested one, and how to turn this off for your own posts.

What we do

ShareLocket reads what your circle shares to find things that belong together — recipes, letters, or another subject that keeps coming up. Collections give you another way to find those posts. The original posts stay where they are.

Reading the words means the title, whatever was written with the post, the date you gave it, and what was said in a voice message once it's been written out. Where we've switched it on, it also means words that appear in a photo, a PDF, or sampled moments from a video, and a short note of what the media shows that we use only for filing and never show to anyone. We never try to work out who is in your photographs.

Where comment reading is enabled, replies can fill in details the post left out. They do not replace something the post already says. Both the person who shared the post and the person who wrote the reply must allow their contributions to be read.

What we read never leaves the circle it came from. If you're in more than one circle, they're kept entirely apart — nothing from one is ever used in another.

This is on by default and happens in the background. You don't need to do anything.

Collections we notice, and you decide

When ShareLocket notices a new group of posts that seem to belong together, it doesn't put it on your shelf straight away. It suggests it on your circle's Collections page, with a name followed by a question mark and a few of the posts, so you can decide what to do with it.

  • Keep it puts the collection on your circle's shelf for everyone. It keeps growing as new posts that fit arrive.
  • Rename lets you type the name you'd use instead; tap Save and keep and it goes on the shelf under that name. We never change a name someone in your circle chose.
  • Not a thing sets it aside. We won't suggest that same group of posts again, and the posts themselves aren't touched.

Changed your mind about keeping one? Right after you keep it, tap Undo. The collection goes back to being a suggestion, with the name we first gave it.

Anyone in the circle can do any of these, and what they choose applies for everyone. You only see a suggestion if you can see at least one of its posts, and its count only includes posts you can see.

Turning it off for your own posts

  1. Sign in and open the circle you mean.
  2. Choose Circle options, then Circle settings.
  3. Turn off Let ShareLocket organize my posts.

Reading your posts and comments stops. The evidence worked out from those contributions in this circle is deleted at the same moment, and it no longer supports automatic collections or the People and Places pages.

What turning it off does not change

Your posts stay exactly where they are in the circle, and everyone can still read and reply to them as before. This setting is only about whether we read the words to gather things together.

Corrections you chose yourself — such as a name you fixed or a post you added to a collection — are kept. Information supported by other members' posts and comments can remain. Chapter names are kept too, just as a name someone typed would be; turning this off does not rename a chapter.

It's your choice, for you. Nobody else can change it — not the person who started the circle, not us — and it doesn't change anything for anybody else. It's also a choice for each circle, so if you're in two and want it off in both, turn it off in each.

You can turn it off even in a circle that's been closed.

Turning it back on

You can turn it back on whenever you like, and your new posts are read as usual from then on.

Posts you shared while it was off aren't gone back over on their own. If there's a particular one you'd like gathered up, open it, choose Edit details, and add it to one of your circle's collections yourself — that takes a moment and works whatever this setting says.
