See your circle's places on a map

See the places your circle has written about on a map, and put a place on the map, move its pin, or take it off.

A map of the places your circle talks about

Your circle's Places page can show the places people write about on a map, right beside the list. Places come from what people wrote in the circle — the names in your posts — and from where photos posted to the circle were taken. A place added from a photo sits at the town or neighbourhood, never at the exact spot.

The map, and every pin on it, is only visible to the people in your circle. Nothing here is shared beyond the circle.

Finding the map

  1. Open your circle.
  2. Near your circle's name at the top of the page, choose Circle options.
  3. Choose Places.

On a phone, the map sits above the list of places. On a larger screen, it sits beside it.

Tap a pin and that place is highlighted in the list. Choose the place in the list to open its own page. If the place is on the map, a small map on its page shows where it is.

If none of your circle's places are on the map yet, the page says "No places on the map yet." and the list works just as it always has.

Browsing places

The places list can be read in pages of 30, ordered by recent activity or by the number of posts about each place. The total includes only places visible to you. A map area filter includes places with a visible pin inside that area; places without a pin remain available in the unfiltered list.

How places get on the map

When a place comes up in your circle, we look it up by its name so we can show it on the map. Only the name of the place is used for this — never who wrote it, what the post said, or your circle's name.

We only put a place on the map when its name clearly points to one spot:

  • We never pin a street address or a house.
  • If a name could mean more than one spot — there is more than one Springfield — we leave it off rather than guess.
  • A name that only makes sense to your circle, like home or Sam's place, is not looked up at all.

A place we could not find is marked Not on the map in the list. It still has its own page, with all its posts and photos. You can put it on the map yourself.

Putting a place on the map

  1. Open the place's page.
  2. Choose Put this on the map. A map opens.
  3. Tap the spot where the place is.
  4. When the page asks Pin it here?, choose Save. Changed your mind? Choose Cancel and nothing changes.

Moving a pin

  1. Open the place's page.
  2. Choose Move the pin. If someone in your circle placed the pin, the page says who placed it, and the button is Move it.
  3. Tap the new spot, then choose Save.

A pin someone in your circle places stays where they put it. Renaming the place, or new posts about it, will not move it.

Taking a place off the map

Open the place's page and choose Not on the map. The place stays in your list with all its posts and photos — it is simply not shown on the map, and it will not be put back on its own. You can put it back any time with Put this on the map.

Anyone in the circle can help

Every member can put a place on the map, move its pin or take it off, not just whoever started the circle. If a change cannot be saved, you will see a short message on the page asking you to try again.
