Add the real date to an old photo

Sharing an old photo today? Tell us the date it's actually from, separate from the day you're posting it.

Some photos are older than the day you share them

A scanned print from a shoebox, or a photo that reached your phone years after it was taken — the day you share something doesn't have to be the day it happened. You can tell us the real date, and we'll keep it.

Adding the date

Whenever you share something — a photo, a video, a note you've written, or a GIF — there's a place to type the date it's from. Write it the way you'd say it; there's no set format. We understand lots of ways to write a date, including:

  • A full date, like July 3, 1998
  • A month and year, like March 1987
  • A season and year, like Summer 1967
  • A holiday and year, like Christmas 2019
  • Just a year, like 1967

If you skip it and you're sharing a photo that already carries a date from the camera or phone that took it, we use that instead.

Changing a date later

Got the date wrong, or skipped it? You can update it any time after you've shared something. Reactions and comments stay as they are.
