Tables in your circle

Choose a table's columns, sort, group, and filter it, read its totals, and open the post behind any row. The cards sort, group, and filter too.

Open a table

Open a collection and choose Table when it is available. Collections with mostly single text, number, or date fields can use this view. Choosing it does not change the collection's usual view. Choose Grid to return to the cards.

Choose your columns

The buttons under Columns show or hide each column. A highlighted button means its column is showing. One column always stays on.

To read the post a row came from, choose Open at the start of the row, or tap or click an empty part of the row. Tapping or clicking a value fixes it instead (see Fix a value in a collection). The link beside a value still opens the post it came from.

Sort the whole collection

Choose a sortable column heading to put its values in order, and choose it again to reverse the direction. You can also pick a column under Sort by and use the arrow button beside it. Sorting covers the whole collection. Numbers sort numerically, and missing values stay at the end in either direction. A dash means there is no value.

Group and filter

  1. Under Group by, choose a person, a place, or Month of a date column. Each group starts with its name and how many rows it holds. Choose No groups to go back.
  2. Under Person or Place, choose someone or somewhere to see only the rows that name them.
  3. Under Dates, fill in From, To, or both. A row stays if its date could fall in that range, so "June 2019" stays for June 10 to June 20. A collection without a date column uses the date each post is from instead, under Memory dates.

The table says how many rows match. Choose Clear filters to see every row again. Your choices carry over when you switch between Table and Grid in the same collection.

Totals

Under the last row, Totals adds up what the table is showing:

  • A number column shows its total and its largest value, like Total 13 lb · largest 7 lb. Money shows the average instead, and times add up across minutes and hours.
  • Different units are never added together. Cups and tablespoons each get their own total.
  • A date column shows the stretch from the first date to the last, like June 3, 2019 to August 1, 2020, one year.
  • A people column counts how many different people appear, like 2 people.

Totals follow your filters, so they always match the rows on the screen. A number someone typed in or corrected counts the same as any other.

Sort, group, and filter the cards

In Grid, the same Sort by, Group by, Person, Place, and Dates controls sit above the cards. As gathered keeps the cards in the order they arrived. Groups show as headings with how many cards each holds.

Using a keyboard, a screen reader, or a phone

Column headings and every control can be reached with Tab and used with Enter or Space. The sorted heading tells screen readers its direction. On a phone the controls stack above the table; focus the table area, or swipe across it, to see every column.

When the collection changes

The table reads the whole collection before it shows totals. If it changes while that happens, the table starts over and tells you. If a read fails, choose Try again. Rows stay readable in a paused circle. Hidden posts, and posts you can't see, aren't counted.
