Documents and Records in Your Circle

Letters, certificates, and other papers can be gathered into a collection, and you can read and correct the words we read from them.

The papers worth keeping

Not everything shared is a photo. A letter found in a drawer, a certificate, a form, a page of a war record — when papers like these are shared in your circle, ShareLocket can gather them into a collection, so they're easy to find again.

Nothing is moved. The post stays where it was shared, and the collection is a second way to find it. A new collection starts as a suggestion on your circle's Collections page, and anyone in the circle can keep it, rename it, or set it aside. See How ShareLocket organizes your circle.

Adding or taking one out

  1. Open the menu on the post the paper is in, and choose Collections.
  2. Choose Add to a collection and pick the collection, or choose Take out beside one it's already in.

Take it out of one and it won't be put back. Your choice stands from then on, for everyone in the circle, and it stays put even if the post is edited later. If it was a mistake, anyone in the circle can add it again.

Reading and correcting the words

When words have been read from a photo, document, or video, open its post and choose Read the content. You'll only see Read the content when a photo has words to show. The first reading may contain mistakes or show only part of the text. In a post with several photos, the words for each photo are shown on their own.

Any active member of the circle can choose Fix this, write what the photo, document, or video says, and choose Save. Choose Cancel to leave it as it was. You can correct it again later. If the words are nonsense, choose Remove and they're gone; Undo in the message that appears brings them back. In a paused circle you can read the words but cannot change them.

After a correction, the panel says Corrected by a member. It shows the corrected words without the earlier automatic-reading notices. Correcting the words does not change the original photo, document, or video.

A video citation can open the video at the moment the words were read. It stays paused until you press play. After a text correction, the citation may open the video without an exact moment.

If something isn't there

The reasons are the same handful every time: the post may be only a few minutes old and not looked at yet; we may not have been sure enough to gather it up; someone may have taken it out; you may have hidden it; or the person who shared it may have turned this off for their own posts.

If it's the second of those, add it yourself with the steps above. We won't overrule your choice.

A word about what this is not

Gathering a letter into a collection doesn't make a copy of it, doesn't send it anywhere, and doesn't share it any more widely than it was already shared. Everything in a collection is visible to exactly the people who could already see the post.

We read the words in a post and, where we've switched it on, the words on a photographed or scanned page, in a PDF or visible in a video. We never try to work out who is in a picture, and we never read anything outside the circle the post is in.
