The Places page in your circle

See the places your circle has talked about, open one to find the posts and photos that mention it, and put a name right.

The places your circle has talked about

As people in your circle write to each other, places come up — the lake house, the school hall, the corner café. ShareLocket keeps a page for each one, so you can open it and find everything your circle has said about it in one place.

Most places come from your own circle's words. A place can also be added from where photos were taken (more on that below). Either way, nothing you see here is visible outside the circle.

Finding it

  1. Open your circle.
  2. Near your circle's name at the top of the page, choose Circle options.
  3. Choose Places, then choose a place to open it.

In that same menu you will find People, which works the same way for the people your circle mentions.

What one place's page shows

At the top is the name of the place. Below it you may see:

  • Chapters here — trips, days out, and gatherings at this place, newest first.
  • Posts — the posts that mention this place, and the posts with photos taken there.
  • Photos and videos — pictures shared with those posts.
  • Collections — any of your circle's collections this place turns up in.

A section only appears when there is something to show, so a place your circle has just started talking about will have a shorter page than one you have been sharing about for years.

Places added from where photos were taken

When someone posts a photo that shows where it was taken, to your circle by website, email, or text, ShareLocket can add a place for it, named for the town or neighbourhood. This usually takes about a minute, and one photo is enough.

The pin sits at that town or neighbourhood, never at the exact spot where a photo was taken. A place's page shows only the posts you can already see.

Anyone in the circle can fix one. Open the place's page, then choose Rename, Move the pin, or Hide this place. Hiding it removes it for everyone in the circle, so you'll be asked Hide this place for everyone in the circle? first. Choose Keep it if you change your mind.

Once someone renames or moves one of these places, later photos from the same spot are added to it, and it is never renamed or moved back on its own. If a place is hidden, later photos from the same spot stay with it and don't bring it back.

Each person chooses how much of where their own photos were taken the rest of the circle sees: the exact spot, the general area, or nowhere. See How much of your location your circle sees.

Fixing a place's name

  1. Open the place's page.
  2. Choose Rename.
  3. Type the name your circle actually uses. It saves when you press Enter or move on to something else, and you'll see Saved.
  4. Choose Close when you're done.

There's no Save button to press. Want a different name after all? Just type over it.

A name you set yourself stays set. It won't be changed back the next time someone writes about it.

A place your circle has mentioned but never named, like "Grandma's house" or "home", shows as Unnamed place until someone chooses Name this place and gives it one.

When two entries are the same place

Sometimes one place turns up twice — the lake house in one post and the cabin in another. When we think that might have happened, the page shows a Same place? section with the two names side by side.

You get to answer either way, and both answers are real:

  • Same place joins the two entries together. Their posts, photos, and collections all end up in one place.
  • Different places tells us they are two different places. We will stop suggesting that pair.

Saying Different places is remembered. We won't ask about that pair again.

After you join two entries, you stay on this place's page, which now shows everything together.

If something does not go through

Occasionally an answer cannot be saved, and you will see a short message on the page explaining why. The most common reason is that someone in your circle has already answered the other way — if they told us two entries are not the same place, we keep them apart, and joining them is not offered again. Renaming either one is usually the easiest way to tell them apart. Nothing is lost when this happens.

Anyone in the circle can help

Correcting names and answering Same place? is open to every member, not just whoever started the circle.

If a place will not open

If a page can't be loaded, you'll see a short message with a Try again button. It's usually a brief connection problem. If it keeps happening, contact us.

The places you can see

Your Places page is built from the posts available to you in this circle. Posts you have hidden and history outside your circle's available window do not contribute to your view, so another member's list can differ from yours.
